katherine pattinson dan ryan ross bekerja di kantor redaksi majalah yang sama. dan hari itu merupakan hari tersibuk bagi mereka.
ryan mendatangi meja katie dan meletakkan secangkir frappuccino. ia berpaling sedikit dari layar komputer. wangi kopi telah menarik perhatiannya.
"thanks, ryan." ujarnya sambil tersenyum.
"you need some energy. you've been working for hours." jawab ryan singkat lalu ia pergi ke tempat kerjanya.
katie menyeruput isi cangkir tersebut, kemudian mulai bicara lagi. "anyway... next sunday, are you busy or something...?"
ryan mengangkat bahu. "or something? hahaha, joke. no, I'm free next sunday. is there anything you want to ask for?"
"actually, I have two tickets for a jazz festival at madison square garden... and I'd like to ask you to join in, and umm..." katie nampak gugup.
"oh, that's perfect. of course I'll join in."
"really?"
"yeah. why?"
"no... it' just, I've never thought that you like jazz." kata katie sambil tertawa. ryan merespon dengan tersenyum singkat. ia menoleh ke arah jam dinding. "oh crap, I'm so late. I must go home now."
"then go."
"but I can't leave you alone here."
"I'm oookay, dear. trust me."
"hahaha. right... see you soon, kat! AND don't force yourself."

setelah itu, ryan meninggalkan katie sendirian di kantor redaksi.
di jalan, sesekali ia menatap tiket jazz festival yang akan didatanginya bersama ryan dengan tersenyum lebar.
he accepted my invitation? what does it mean.... a date? ah, no. don't be so stupid, kat. he just likes it and that's all. besides, he already has a girlfriend--wait a minute. is ryan officially dating jessie? hmm, this is confusing me.
ia terlalu memusingkan masalah ryan dan jessie sampai ia tidak berkonsentrasi menyetir. akibatnya, katie tidak melihat bahwa sebuah mobil di depannya nyaris menabraknya. begitu ia tersadar dari lamunannya, dia spontan banting stir ke arah berlawanan dan mobilnya menghantam sebuah truk pengangkut besar. mobilnya hancur.
dalam kondisi setengah sadar, katie bisa mendengar sayup-sayup suara orang-orang yang berdatangan untuk menolongnya. namun ia tidak bisa melihat situasi tersebut karena semuanya terlihat gelap.
California Hospital Medical Center. 7:12 am.
bau-bauan yang aneh membangunkan gue. meskipun gue belum sepenuhnya sadar, tapi gue tau kalo sekarang ini gue lagi ada di rumah sakit.
kepala gue terasa sangat pusing pas gue berusaha untuk bangun. pandangan gue gelap, dan gue bisa merasakan sesuatu yang menutupi kedua mata gue. perban?

...dan gue nggak bisa melihat apapun.
OK, this is not good.
terdengar suara seseorang membuka pintu. gue refleks langsung menoleh.
"hey, katherine." sapa orang itu. "don't worry, my name is edd. I'm your doctor to take care of you." oh jadi dia dokter toh.
"what happens to me?" gue nanya. well, sepertinya gue udah tau jawabannya.
"hmm..." ia berpikir sebentar. "it's all because of that accident."
"yeah, then?"
"I've read about your condition, and... your cornea was totally damaged. sorry miss, you lose your sight. we are afraid it's going to be permanent."
I can't believe this. gue kehilangan kemampuan gue untuk melihat. gue buta. ini semua gara-gara kecelakaan kemarin. gue langsung merasa lemas.
"but... can I have it back? I mean, I still can see again, right?"
dokter itu diam.
"well... if someone wants to give his or hers, then your eyes will be back normal. and you must stay here for a while for medical treatment. I got to go. see you soon, miss katherine." dan ia pergi.
"heyy katie! oh my god, look at you. we're so sorry about your condition." kata sebuah suara yang gue sinyalir adalah suara deanna, sahabat baik gue. "that's ok. thank god I'm still alive." sahut gue berusaha meyakinkan mereka dan tersenyum. gue bisa merasakan keprihatinan mereka.
"hello, kat. I hope you get well soon." ujar ryan singkat. itu aja udah cukup untuk membuat gue bahagia. "yes, thank you very much!" gue menjawab dengan senang.
"and what doctor said to you?" kali ini giliran mia yang bertanya.
"hmm, not much. he said he could make my eyes getting back to normal, as long as someone wants to give the cornea." gue menjelaskan.
"oh."
"well... I really want to see you again at the office. I hope you're going to be okay." deanna menyemangati. ia menggenggam tangan gue.
"thanks. you're my best friend ever."
"you're welcome, kat."
"well it looks like it's time for us to go. see you soon, katie." kata mia tiba-tiba. oh iya, gue lupa. mereka kan masih ada pekerjaan.
malam harinya, seseorang mengetuk pintu kamar katie.
"who is that?"
"guess who..."
cewek itu tersenyum lebar. "ryan, right?"
"damn girl, you are a good voice detector." katanya bernada protes. katie tertawa. "I bring you sunflowers, your favourite."
"thanks." well. dia selalu tau apa yang katie suka, dan apa yang enggak. and that makes her love him.
"you've done working, hmm?" dia iseng-iseng bertanya. meski nggak bisa melihat, katie bisa mendengar suara langkah sepatu ryan, dan duduk di kursi di dekatnya. "hmm. actually I haven't. but I came here because I care about you. is that wrong?"
"no, no! it doesn't mean I don't want you to come. but..." kalimatnya terpotong.
"but what?"
"is that all? no... any particular reason?" katie berusaha memancing ryan.
ryan nampak berpikir sebentar. "no, that's all I guess." katanya.
"oh..." katie nampak kecewa. "anyway, have you been falling in love recently?"
"ha, I never thought of such things. I've been busy working lately." jawabnya enteng. sesaat katie merasa lega. berarti soal jessie dan ryan pacaran... itu cuma gosip.
"oh, I see." katie merespon sambil tersenyum.
"and why do we suddenly talk about this?"
"just wondering, ry. am I wrong?"
"haha... okay. hey, do you want some apple? because I want to have one." ia mengalihkan pembicaraan, seraya mengambil apel di atas meja.
"well I'd love to."
10:00 pm.
"okay, kat... I guess I should go home now." ryan mengakhiri kunjungannya. "see you soon, sweetheart."
"haha. yeah, see you soon."

"oh hey, deanna. come in!"
"I bring you some food and--hey, what a beautiful flower. who brought this?" tanya deanna.
"you probably won't believe it... ryan did."
"wow! he is so sweet. I think he likes you." ujar deanna antusias. "hmmh, I don't think so. he just brought flowers! it doesn't mean anything. besides... he said he's too busy to think about love." tukas katie sedikit kecewa.
"don't be silly... just be positive okay? I'm pretty sure you and him will be happily together."
"you think so?" katie masih ragu.
"yes."
tiba-tiba ryan muncul di belakang deanna. "I guess I must leave you alone. good luck, katie." bisiknya. kemudian ia langsung pergi keluar.
"hey ryan. you come so often."
"hey dean. yeah... I'm just quite bored at the office."
deanna pergi.
"ryan is that you?"
"yes, it's me. hey, there's a lotta food in here."
"deanna brought them for me." sahut katie. "great, I'm starving!" kata ryan yang kedengeran kayak anak kecil. katie cengar-cengir.
"what so funny?" tanya ryan di sela-sela kegiatannya memasukkan sesuap yoghurt ke mulutnya.
"nothing... hey, I'm hungry too. hospital food makes me sick. can I have one?"
"okay. just open your mouth. here you go..." katie membuka mulutnya dan ryan menyuap yoghurt ke mulutnya. "thanks."
"you're welcome."
"good afternoon, miss katherine. this is doctor edd--oh, you're having a good time now with your boyfriend." sejenak katie merasa salah tingkah, namun ia berhasil mengatasinya. "ehm, he is *not* my boyfriend."
"really?" edd langsung beralih pada ryan. "excuse me, mister..."
"ryan. just call me that."
"okay. I'm sorry ryan, but I must check her condition. could you wait outside for a while please?"
ryan mengangguk.
tidak lama kemudian, ryan diperbolehkan masuk kembali.
"any good news?" tanyanya.
"actually it is very good."
"tell me."
"next week, I'm going to have a surgery. finally someone wants to give his cornea for me!"
"oh wow. that's nice! congratulations, katie."
katie langsung memeluk ryan saking senangnya. ryan membalas sambil tersenyum.
katie's POV.
malam sudah larut.
"ryan, can I ask you a favour?"
"sure. what is it?"
"I'm bored stay alone at the hospital, so could you... stay here with me untill tomorrow?"
ryan nampaknya berpikir sebentar. "okay, I'll stay here for you."
"promise me you won't leave me?"
ryan meraih kedua tangan gue lalu menggenggamnya erat-erat. "I promise I won't leave you."
gue langsung blushing. "...thanks dude. you are very kind."

ya sudahlah. yang penting dia mau nemenin gue di rumah sakit.
gue bangun dan tangan gue menyentuh sesuatu. tangan? oh, dia masih ada di sini. he keeps his promise. gue jadi terharu.
tangannya bergeser. rupanya ia terbangun.

"hey, good morning." sahut gue sambil tersenyum.
"see, I keep my promise. I never leave you."

"and now I must go back. because I have lot of things to do. is that alright?"

gue hanya nggak menyadari. itu adalah pembicaraan terakhir antara gue dan dia.
sehari sebelum operasi.
"whoa I can't believe you finally did that." respon deanna takjub setelah katie menceritakan semuanya.
"you don't know how nervous I was. but I must admit that he was so sweet to me... is it a sign?"
"I told you."
"anyway, do you know where he is? because he's never coming back after that." tanya katie. "you know, I want him to be in my side while I'm doing the surgery."
reaksi deanna berubah seketika. "uhh, I don't know."
"is he okay at the office?"
"yes, yes. he is totally fine."

"hello, kat. sorry I haven't seen you for a long time." tiba-tiba ryan langsung muncul. "got to go now, kat. the guy you're looking for is here." bisik deanna. dan ia langsung pergi.

"hi, ryan. where have you been?" gue bertanya.
"so... deanna hasn't told you before?"
"about what?" tentang apa? deanna nggak pernah cerita apa-apa. "tell me, ryan."
"katie, I want you to know." suara ryan terdengar sangat bahagia. so I guess he's going to propose me.... wait. this is too fast. tapi mungkin juga kan? after everything he did to me...

"GO AWAY FROM ME!" teriak katie. ia melemparkan bantal di dekatnya, namun tidak mengenai ryan ataupun jessie. bantal itu mengenai vas berisi bunga matahari dari ryan. vas tersebut jatuh dan pecah.
"Katie, I don't understand what happen to you! I..." namun deanna langsung masuk ke kamar katie dan menyuruh mereka berdua keluar. di sana, ia menarik ryan ke tempat yang agak jauh dari jessie.
"what the hell were you doing?!"
"doing what?" ryan nggak mengerti.
"are you trying to murder her?"
"what are you--of course not! what are you talking about?"
"she loves you, ry." kata deanna akhirnya. jelas aja dia langsung kaget. "she loves you... but she couldn't tell it. and now you're going to marry someone else while her condition is like this!"
ryan kehabisan kata-kata. ia tidak tau harus bicara apa.
"then what am I supposed to do?"
"leave her. stay away from her." setelah itu, deanna memasuki kamar katie dan menutup pintunya.
"what happened, ry?" jessie mendekati ryan. ryan hanya menggeleng.
"nothing happens."
di dalam kamar katie.
katie duduk di atas tempat tidurnya, memeluk kedua kakinya.
"katie... katie, this is deanna." ujar deanna pelan sambil mendekati katie. ia langsung memeluknya untuk menghibur sahabatnya itu.
katie menangis sejadi-jadinya.
"my god, ryan! I can't believe we can meet here!" ujar katie antusias. cowok itu menoleh. "hey kat. I see you look better now."
"yeah... I can see again, finally. um, where's jessie?"
"she's not coming with me. it's my time to be alone."

"do you mind walking with me?" ajaknya.
"not at all." respon katie sambil tersenyum.
beberapa jam dihabiskan mereka untuk jalan-jalan berdua. banyak hal yang dibicarakan mereka.
"It's been a week... after my marriage with jessie." kata ryan tiba-tiba.
"haha, yeah. too bad I couldn't attend it. I was too busy preparing my movement." sahut katie ringan.
"what? you're leaving LA?" katie mengangguk. "I'm going to move to minnesota tomorrow, to find a better life there."
"but... this is too fast. you haven't told me anything yet."

"deanna has told you anything, hasn't she?"
ryan mengerti apa yang dimaksud. "yes, she has."
"so, before I go... let me get this all straight." katie menoleh ke arah ryan.

gue sedang sibuk mengerjakan tugas artikel gue ketika sebuah e-mail masuk ke inbox.

gue hanya nggak menyadari. itu adalah pembicaraan terakhir antara gue dan dia.

normal POV.sehari sebelum operasi.
"whoa I can't believe you finally did that." respon deanna takjub setelah katie menceritakan semuanya.
"you don't know how nervous I was. but I must admit that he was so sweet to me... is it a sign?"
"I told you."
"anyway, do you know where he is? because he's never coming back after that." tanya katie. "you know, I want him to be in my side while I'm doing the surgery."
reaksi deanna berubah seketika. "uhh, I don't know."
"is he okay at the office?"
"yes, yes. he is totally fine."
"then what happen?"
"nothing happens."
"deanna, please. don't lie to me. I know something happens."

"katie, listen--"
katie's POV.
"hello, kat. sorry I haven't seen you for a long time." tiba-tiba ryan langsung muncul. "got to go now, kat. the guy you're looking for is here." bisik deanna. dan ia langsung pergi.
"hey... katie."
"hi, ryan. where have you been?" gue bertanya.
"so... deanna hasn't told you before?"
"about what?" tentang apa? deanna nggak pernah cerita apa-apa. "tell me, ryan."
"katie, I want you to know." suara ryan terdengar sangat bahagia. so I guess he's going to propose me.... wait. this is too fast. tapi mungkin juga kan? after everything he did to me...

"I want to introduce you... to jessie. I'm going to marry her next week." katanya masih dengan nada riang yang sama.
senyum gue memudar. apa yang ada di kata hati gue benar. I should have stopped all of those stupid dreams, because he doesn't love me.
he loves jessie.

normal POV.
"could you... could you leave me alone, please?"
"what? why?" tanya ryan.
"just leave."
"but kat--"
"GO AWAY FROM ME!" teriak katie. ia melemparkan bantal di dekatnya, namun tidak mengenai ryan ataupun jessie. bantal itu mengenai vas berisi bunga matahari dari ryan. vas tersebut jatuh dan pecah.
"Katie, I don't understand what happen to you! I..." namun deanna langsung masuk ke kamar katie dan menyuruh mereka berdua keluar. di sana, ia menarik ryan ke tempat yang agak jauh dari jessie.
"what the hell were you doing?!"
"doing what?" ryan nggak mengerti.
"are you trying to murder her?"
"what are you--of course not! what are you talking about?"
"she loves you, ry." kata deanna akhirnya. jelas aja dia langsung kaget. "she loves you... but she couldn't tell it. and now you're going to marry someone else while her condition is like this!"
ryan kehabisan kata-kata. ia tidak tau harus bicara apa.
"then what am I supposed to do?"
"leave her. stay away from her." setelah itu, deanna memasuki kamar katie dan menutup pintunya.
"what happened, ry?" jessie mendekati ryan. ryan hanya menggeleng.
"nothing happens."
di dalam kamar katie.
katie duduk di atas tempat tidurnya, memeluk kedua kakinya.
"katie... katie, this is deanna." ujar deanna pelan sambil mendekati katie. ia langsung memeluknya untuk menghibur sahabatnya itu.
katie menangis sejadi-jadinya.

dua minggu kemudian. Westside Pavilion Mall."my god, ryan! I can't believe we can meet here!" ujar katie antusias. cowok itu menoleh. "hey kat. I see you look better now."
"yeah... I can see again, finally. um, where's jessie?"
"she's not coming with me. it's my time to be alone."
"oh."
"do you mind walking with me?" ajaknya.
"not at all." respon katie sambil tersenyum.
beberapa jam dihabiskan mereka untuk jalan-jalan berdua. banyak hal yang dibicarakan mereka.
"It's been a week... after my marriage with jessie." kata ryan tiba-tiba.
"haha, yeah. too bad I couldn't attend it. I was too busy preparing my movement." sahut katie ringan.
"what? you're leaving LA?" katie mengangguk. "I'm going to move to minnesota tomorrow, to find a better life there."
"but... this is too fast. you haven't told me anything yet."
"I know."
sunyi.
"deanna has told you anything, hasn't she?"
ryan mengerti apa yang dimaksud. "yes, she has."
"so, before I go... let me get this all straight." katie menoleh ke arah ryan.
lalu menciumnya.
ryan balas mencium katie.
"goodbye, ryan." bisiknya sambil tersenyum lirih. namun ryan hanya menatapnya tanpa mengucapkan apapun.
ia langsung berbalik dan pergi meninggalkan ryan. di jalan ia menyeka air matanya.

katie's POV.beberapa bulan kemudian. apartemen di minnesota.
gue sedang sibuk mengerjakan tugas artikel gue ketika sebuah e-mail masuk ke inbox.
gue tersenyum melihat nama pengirimnya.
